What do you need to grow orchids?

I am about to get married and my wife loves orchids, I want to give her a freshly planted orchid seed for a wedding gift. I have been told that they take years to grow and I thought it would be a nice symbolic gesture of how our love should grow over the years. I want to know what I need to buy to make sure this doesn't turn out to be a pile of dirt in a pretty plant pot. My idea is to buy an "Orchid Kit" with everything she will need.
