How to know if someone you like is single? should i be straightforward?

i dont have a sibling to ask about relationship advice plus my parents arent really the type someone goes to ask about relationship as they want me to just concentrate in college. theres this girl i like but i dont know if she is single. last girl i liked i didnt ask until i accidently found out and well i felt crushed. should i just ask her straightforward?
