Isn't it true that most people don't go by the pre-Super Bowl years?

You can't discount the pre-Super Bowl era just because Super Bowls are huge today. Those teams back then had no control over how the games were played and how champions were crowned. For example, Alabama claims 13 national championships in football, but only 1 of those has occurred in the BCS-era. Should they only count 1? No (but they shouldn't count all 13, either. that's another story, lol). I understand what you're saying, though.
